Vancouver Board of Trade Distinguished Speaker Program

Speaker:

Robert T. F. Reid, Chair, British Columbia Transmission Corporation

The utility industry in North America has been in the spotlight in recent years. Massive power failures, industry restructuring and corporate bankruptcies have all contributed to the heightened attention placed on the electricity sector. Government and industry on both sides of the border are looking for solutions that ensure secure, reliable, low-cost power today and in the future.

In B.C. we have a world-class model in place that protects, enhances and allows for future growth of our electricity grid. Officially launched August 1, 2003, the British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC) is an independent, publicly-owned company that is fully responsible for operating, maintaining and planning for the future growth of B.C.'s electricity transmission system - the high voltage lines and transmission towers that cover our province.

Reid will shed light on BCTC's important role in the power mix and will explain the lessons B.C. has learned from other models operating around North America. He will also explain how this new, independent Crown Corporation will help ensure British Columbians continue to enjoy reliable, low-cost power – a significant benefit to B.C.'s economy.
